Opinion On: SS18 Menswear Shows

Although I don't think I have fully developed my style, I have developed a very particular taste. After looking at some of the collections from the recent Menswear shows in London, Florence, Milan, Paris and New York, I have pulled together a list of my favorite shows and have featured my favorite look for each in the gallery above.

The Value Of Knowledge

When you have a true passion for something you are constantly seeking out new information and trying to learn as much as you can about that subject. Whether it is a new skateboard trick or knowing more about the clothes that you wear every day, you will stop at nothing to find the information you're looking for. Why am I addressing this? Because fashion has become less about knowledge and more about flexing. Instead of searching for rare piece and spending ages tracking it down, people would rather buy the newest Supreme pieces only to post them on Instagram. Fashion is turning into a social symbol rather than a passion.

Trend: Military Holsters

We just saw the rise of the fanny pack -- whether it was vintage Nike or Supreme, they were everywhere. On the other hand, we have the A-Cold-Wall shoulder bags which have become highly associated with the brand with over the last couple of years. Now recently in the world of man bags, we have seen a variety of different military bags gain popularity, such as the SS17 Undercover military vest shown in the second photo. -
There are a couple of brands putting out bags in this style – including everything from tech-wear brands like Guerilla Group to established designers like Jil Sander and even new comer brand Ø [EMPTY SETT]. I have compiled some of my favorites in the pictures above and tagged the brands. Make sure to stay tuned for more posts coming soon.

Personal Style

Personal style is something I am constantly so confused about, because for a week I’ll be all about one style and like items that all look good together, then after I’ll see someone rocking something interesting that is completely different to my style and I’ll completely rethink what I am doing. And the problem is that it just keeps happening, over and over again.

Fashion and Fitness

Often these 2 topics don’t go together, at least with “streetwear”, everyone smokes, everyone drinks and does drugs, that is the culture that surrounds it. If we look at the rest of menswear, being healthy is complimented, and is celebrated.

A Stream of Consciousness: Menswear, Clothing worn by Men

Most people in fashion think of menswear as suits, and sweaters and form fitting clothing that is sold at high end department stores, but why is the term menswear limited to just that? Shouldn’t all clothing made for men be menswear? In recent times the lines between streetwear and high fashion have blurred, there used to be a thick line, but over the past years it has gotten smaller at an accelerating pace and I think it’s time to say that the line is as small as it’ll ever be right now. With collaborations between brands like Supreme and Louis Vuitton, brands like Off-White, that have “streetwear roots” but have fashion shows, and with people from both sides of the spectrum now constantly mixing brands from high and low in their outfits, we might as well just call it menswear.

Vertical Stripes

Stripes come and go, but this spring, stripes are back in a new way. Usually, we're used to seeing horizontal stripes making us think of sailor’s shirts, but this season we’ll be seeing more vertical stripes. We’re seeing pants, cardigans, button-ups and more with vertical stripes, and a lot of them thicker than usual.

A Stream of Consciousness: Style, Sub-cultures and High Fashion

With the internet, do sub-cultures even still exist? Sure, you could have called streetwear a sub-culture 5-10 years ago, but now with the internet, streetwear has exploded in popularity that it could hardly be called one anymore. Streetwear has gone mainstream and we all need to accept that, but I do believe that within streetwear are smaller micro-cultures, that are outside of the world of brands like Supreme, Yeezy or Bape.

Korean Streetwear

We’ve all known about Japanese streetwear for the last 10 years or so, but not really any non-Japanese brands have made it internationally. In recent times though, we have seen a variety of Korean brands grow. What makes Korean brands interesting is that exclusivity doesn’t play a large role, they focus on having the best product at the best price point as the market is very competitive.
